From the US Department of Education, Office of Career Technical and Adult Education Newsletter, March 20, 2014: "The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards recently announced a public comment period for its revised Career and Technical Education (CTE) Standards, 2nd edition. They were drafted by a committee of CTE educators and other experts as the foundation for National Board Certification in CTE, and are available for review through a public comment survey until April 13."
Purpose of Program: The purpose of the Alaska Native Education (ANE) program is to support innovative projects that enhance the educational services provided to Alaska Native children and adults. These projects may include the activities authorized under section 7304(a)(2) and (a)(3) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended (ESEA).
Note:Congress has expressly authorized the use of FY 2014 program funds for construction of facilities that support the operation of Alaska Native education programs. "Skills to Pay the Bills: Mastering Soft Skills for Workplace Success," is a curriculum developed by ODEP focused on teaching "soft" or workforce readiness skills to youth, including youth with disabilities. Created for youth development professionals as an introduction to workplace interpersonal and professional skills, the curriculum is targeted for youth ages 14 to 21 in both in-school and out-of-school environments. The basic structure of the program is comprised of modular, hands-on, engaging activities that focus on six key skill areas: communication, enthusiasm and attitude, teamwork, networking, problem solving and critical thinking, and professionalism. ![]()
Alaska’s Statewide Library Electronic Doorway (SLED) offers a wide variety of Peterson’s Test Preparation Packages, practice tests, and a wealth of information about preparing for postsecondary training, all at no charge to Alaskans.
Peterson’s Test Preparation Packages give students practice tests and resources for many of the assessments they may take, including WorkKeys, PSAT, SAT, PLAN, ACT, GED, CLEP, ASVAB, TOEFL, civil service tests, PRAXIS, and more. Also included are checklists for students and parents for each year of high school, scholarship search, career-specific tests, and much more. UAS Offers Course in Coaching Online Students The University of Alaska Southeast is offering a one-credit course for paraprofessionals, parents, and substitute teachers, about coaching students who are taking courses online. The course is intended to help build a culture and environment of support and achievement for high school students taking online courses (Alaska’s Learning Network and other) statewide. The course centers on the online student and instructional and behavioral supports they need to complete their online courses. The course ($90) is a three-part course delivered via Blackboard including:
![]() EED provided a training/presentation to participants at the 2013 PDC on how CTE programs could connect with the newly-adopted state standards in math and English/language arts. A recent report authored by the College & Career Pathways division at the Community and Technical College examines a new model for college and career readiness. The model consists of six areas: Goal Setting, Attitudes, College Knowledge, Academics, and Habits.
