"Data Driven: Higher Earnings Through CTE"

5/29/2015

From ACTE's CTE Policy Watch Blog, 5/28/15 -

"By 2018, the U.S. will need at least 4.7 million new workers with postsecondary certificates.[i]"

"Employment and earnings success is about more than a student's highest level of education -- field of study is key. As the Georgetown researchers have reported, certificate holders in high-wage, high-demand fields such as computer and information science, electronics, and business and office management earn more than many associate and bachelor's degree holders.[ii] "

According to the report by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce,  a bachelor or higher degree does not automatically result in higher wagers.  43% of young workers with licenses and certificates earn a higher salary than associate degree holders; 27 % of young workers with licenses and certificates earn more than those with a bachelor's degree; and 31 % of young workers with associate degrees make more than those with bachelor's degrees.[i]

NIOSH Highlights Young Worker Safety

5/11/2015

As students head into the summer job season, this is a good reminder from NIOSH about young worker safety.  The article includes links to some great resources such as NIOSH Core Competencies and the accompanying curriculum for middle and high school students, available at no cost at Youth@Work-Talking Safety.
From the NIOSH eNews, May 2015.
For the entire article, visit this link.

". . . work readiness skills—such as problem solving, collaboration, and information technology literacy--must also include competencies that equip young people to stay safe and healthy on the job and to contribute to safe, healthy, and productive workplaces. These competencies are critical given that more than 80% of teens will work at some time while in high school and most are unprepared for the hazards they face on the job. In fact, young people under age 25 are twice as likely as adults to get hurt at work."
