DEED  Solicits for  CTSO Contractor

"The Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) Career and Technical Education (CTE) program is seeking and contractor for:
  1. Promotion, development, and continuation of all Career & Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) organizations throughout the state of Alaska with an emphasis in increased student participation, especially at rural sites; 
  2. Provision of professional development for CTSO advisors (teachers); and 
  3. Coordination and planning for the annual statewide CTSO conference. "

AWIB Seeks Nominations for David G. Stone CTE/Workforce Development Awards!

As part of its mission to support education and training that leads to employment and careers, the Alaska Workforce Investment Board (AWIB) is soliciting nominations for three categories of the David G. Stone Award. The award, which was established to recognize outstanding partners in workforce development, was named in recognition of Mr. Stone’s dedication to workforce development and Alaska hire. Mr. Stone served as the Department of Labor and Workforce Development deputy commissioner and as vice-chair of the AWIB for many years. He was a dedicated public servant serving on the Juneau Assembly as deputy mayor, Southeast Conference, Alaska Municipal League, Alaska Miners Association, and helped to establish mine training programs throughout Alaska.

Awards are given in three categories:
  • Employer of the Year
  • K-12 Career and Technical Education Instructor/Administrator
  • Post-secondary Career and Technical Education Instructor/Administrator

DOLWD Receives Grant to Expand Apprenticeships in Health Care and Aviation

JUNEAU, Alaska—The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a competitive grant of $1,019,985 to the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development to train Alaskans for careers in the health care and aviation industries. The training will utilize Registered Apprenticeships, which are employer driven workforce development programs that combine structured on the job training with technical classroom instruction.

Registered Apprenticeships supported by the grant include Community Health Worker, Medical Administrative Assistant, Clinical Medical Assistant, Medical Biller/Coder, Commercial Pilot, Airframe and Power Plant Mechanic, and Aircraft Dispatcher. The apprenticeships will be accessible statewide, with strong participation from air carriers and primary care clinics serving rural villages and hub communities, in addition to Alaska’s urban centers.

Wondering if industry certifications actually make a difference? Advance CTE and the Wall Street Journal recently addressed this question.

"Study highlights show that it’s practically imperative for workers entering the workforce to possess Microsoft Office skills. “The most commonly required skills are also the most basic ones,” the report states. “Spreadsheet and word-processing software such as Microsoft Corp.’s Excel and Word.” . . .    Despite these benefits, workers entering workforce often come without the needed baseline digital skills.  . . ."

Executive Director Search - Closes November 4, 2016

The Alaska Health Care Apprenticeship Consortium is seeking a full-time Executive Director (ED) who will lead the Board of Directors and expand the organization. The Executive Director must be a Visionary Leader, Strategist, External Influencer, and Non-Profit Organization Builder.

The Alaska Health Care Apprenticeship Consortium (AHCAC) is a new multi-employer health care workforce development organization utilizing registered apprenticeship. The AHCAC is a 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation supporting Alaska’s health care employers’ needs of a skilled workforce while offering Alaska’s residents an earn-while-you-learn career option.

The ED will report directly to the Board. The essential duties and responsibilities of the position include the following areas:
