In response to industry needs for skilled Heavy Equipment Operators (HEO) and Heavy Duty Repair Technicians (HDR), CEF has worked with school districts around the state to develop ways of encouraging high school students to HEO/HDR careers. These efforts include working with local industry advisory groups to identify entry-level training and skills needed for employment or further training in their region, and developing HEO curriculum, training materials, and a HEO Program of Study, based on NCCER standards. In early June, CEF provided 2 weeks of intensive training, dubbed HEO Capstone, for 12 dedicated young Alaskans who expressed interest in heavy equipment operation or maintenance careers. The students, who were at least 18 years of age, were selected from three participating school districts: Fairbanks North Star Borough, Lake and Peninsula, and Kuspuk. This class was offered May 25 - June 6, 2015 at the Fairbanks Pipeline Training Center, and the students were housed onsite. HEO Capstone 2015 prepared these youth for the next step in their chosen career pathway. Students who successfully completed all requirements received NCCER Core and HEO Level 1 certificates and are listed in the national registry. They also received industry credentials, including First Aid/CPR, NSTC, OSHA 10, and Forklift cards. Students also prepared a resume and career plan to encourage a smooth transition to university, registered apprenticeship or to employment. ". . . work readiness skills—such as problem solving, collaboration, and information technology literacy--must also include competencies that equip young people to stay safe and healthy on the job and to contribute to safe, healthy, and productive workplaces. These competencies are critical given that more than 80% of teens will work at some time while in high school and most are unprepared for the hazards they face on the job. The Standards Setting sessions will be held in Anchorage on July 7-10, 2015. Panelists must participate in person. Panelists’ travel to and from Anchorage will be covered in addition to lodging, $60/day per diem, and, a stipend of $100 per day if the educator is not on contract during that time. Expenses, stipends, and per diem will be paid by the Achievement and Assessment Institute (AAI). In addition, EED will be selecting a portion of the Standard Setting group to participate in an additional Alignment activity tentatively scheduled for one day during the first week of June in Anchorage. If you are unable to attend this additional activity it will not affect your eligibility to participate in the Standard Setting group. AMP are the new, computer-based assessments for grades 3-10 that align with the Alaska English Language Arts and Mathematics Standards. AMP is a custom, Alaska assessment developed by the Achievement & Assessment Institute (AAI) and administered to Alaska students in grades 3-10 for the first time in spring 2015. The Standards Setting panels will make considered judgments about achievement levels based on assessment responses. To be effective as a Standards Setting panelist, educators must have the ability to work as part of a team and understand consensus development processes. Panelists must have 1) experience teaching in mathematics and/or English language arts at the specified grade levels, and 2) be knowledgeable in the Alaska Standards. Standard setting panel diversity is essential and EED will select panelists, to the best extent possible, based on the tested student population of Alaska in terms of ethnicity, gender, and regional representation. All grade level panels will include educators with special education and/or LEP experience. Grade level 9 and 10 panels will include post-secondary educators. Please select the following link and complete the online application: http://bit.ly/AMP_StandardSetting Participants will be notified via email if they are selected in order to confirm their availability. Additionally, those not chosen for a panel will receive notification by May 1. From the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development's "EED Information Exchange," March 27, 2015:
Department and ACT Recognize College and Career Readiness Efforts This year, Alaska has joined ACT’s College and Career Readiness Campaign, which provides states the opportunity to recognize – across the education and workforce continuum – exemplary college and career readiness efforts in four categories: Student Readiness, College and Career Transition, Career Preparedness, and Workplace Success. The campaign began in 2013 with six states participating, and this year over 30 states have joined. During the State Board of Education & Early Development meeting on March 19 in Juneau, the department recognized Alaska’s 2015 nominees. This year, the department selected nominees in three categories: Student Readiness, College and Career Transition, and Career Preparedness. The Student Readiness category recognizes an exemplary high school senior who embodies successful readiness for college and career. Alaska’s 2015 Student Readiness nominee is Ariel Hasse of Mat-Su Career and Technical High School. The College and Career Transition category recognizes an exemplary high school that embodies successful preparation for college and career. Alaska’s 2015 College and Career Transition nominee is Kotzebue Middle/High School in Kotzebue. The Career Preparedness category recognizes an exemplary community college that advances successful preparation for student careers. Alaska’s 2015 Career Preparedness nominee is Ilisagvik College in Barrow. Each state-selected nominee has received a certificate of recognition from ACT. The Student Readiness nominee, Ariel Hasse, also will receive a scholarship from ACT toward attendance at the postsecondary institution of her choice. One national award recipient will be chosen in each category. On June 9, ACT will host the National Gala for College and Career Readiness in Washington, D.C. to celebrate all nominees across the participating states. Each of Alaska’s nominees will be considered in the coming months for the national award in each of their respective categories. ACT will cover the travel expenses of the four national award recipients and one guest of each recipient to attend the National Gala. ACT will recognize Alaska’s nominees at: http://www.act.org/readinesscampaign/. For more information about the campaign, please contact Erin Thompson, CCRA Program Coordinator, at 907-465-6535. |
